Notes

  • Marriage:
The London/Liverpool line was being built (dug) in Berkhamsted about 1834. Certainly nearby Boxmoor (now Hemel Hempstead) station was opened in 1837.

Hertfordshire CC Archives say that his marriage record gives neither father nor age, and no Waller witnesses.

    Censuses:
1841C: Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire. As 'Chas'. Excavator. a25. With Sarah a20 and John, as 'Jno' (assumed to be Charles' brother) a20.
1851C: Not found. Wife Sarah is dead, and the three living children are with their grandmother and aunt in Berkhamsted.
London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906 has christening as 8-May-1813 or 8-May-1814.

    Death:
Not found in the 1851C, and Mary Jane, together with her siblings John and Elizabeth, is with her aunt and grandmother in Berkhamsted. He is certainly 'deceased' by 1865 per daughter Elizabeth's marriage record. (John's marriage in 1860, and daughter Mary Jane's marriage in 1866 record him as a 'Labourer').

As he was born 1811 to 1816 (from 1841C), he was aged 25 to 30 in 1841. He was the informant at his wife Sarah's death in 1849, so would have been aged 33 to 38 at that point. By 1951C, in which he is not found, he would have been aged 35 to 40. He therefore died aged 33 to 40 at death.

From a GRO search for a Charles Waller death registered 1849 to 1851, with age 33 to 40, and at a credible place:

    (a)   Charles Cock Waller, JulQ1848 aged 35, Lambeth (4/180) - but he was married in Jul-1838 in the City of London - and not to Sarah Lane!

    (b)   Charles Waller, OctQ1851  aged 33, Poplar (2/277) - just after the 1851C. However the Death Certificate shows this to be Charles Waller of 52 Wells Street, Poplar, a Mariner. The informant is Ann Waller.

    (c)   Charles Waller who died 27th December 1855 in Marylebone aged 42. The age fits, and the location is credible, but the Death Certificate shows the place of death as 'St Marylebone Workhouse', with 'Rank or Profession' as 'Nurse', and the informant as 'E. Marlow'.

    Conclusion:
The Charles Waller line shown is the most likely, but it is far from certain.
