"Thomas was in the army from 1862 to 1881 and spent approx. the last 10 years of his service in Ireland, including Monaghan. Thomas returned with his wife and family late in 1881 to the area and initially lived in George Street. Having learnt of his sister Emma from your research it came as no surprise to discover that Emma and Edwin Waterhouse [sic] (plus 6 children) were living at 79, George St. at the time of the 1881 census. Hard to imagine but I wonder if they were all crammed into that tiny house when Thomas returned. Thomas worked as nightwatchman at Ashridge House from 1881 until sometime between 1901 and 1911. The family were in Raven's Lane on 1891 census but had secured an estate worker's house in Little Gaddesden by 1901." (Penny Holland).
