1861C: Leighton Buzzard. As Jane Linquist. Boarder. With Robert Smith, wife Sarah and her daughter Sarah Ann. No Occupation shown.

In view of the above, and that her mmn=" " in the GRO Birth Index, it is assumed that she is an illegitimate child of Sarah Linquist (nee Milend) and either Robert Smith or an unknown father, and that John Peter Lindquist was unwilling to house her in the family home.

1911C: Fenny Stratford. Housekeeper. With Felce family, and children Albert, Herbert and William. Twelve children born to marriage; three dead.

"My mother-in-law remembers her Grandmother Jane Linquist/Smith, and believes she died around 1926. Her memory of Jane is that she was "quite different [from the other grandmother, Emma Cook]; she was very ... basic. She wasn't educated, let's put it that way". This would tie in with her being labelled Visitor and Boarder throughout her life with Robert and his wife Sarah. It's difficult to imagine her being given any education at all in that position. I have Jane's birth certificate; her mother is Sarah Linquist (no maiden name given), and her father is given as "Robert" which is crossed out in both the original register and the GRO copy. When she married, she used the name Linquist and stated Robert Smith as her father." (Kim Tilsed)

"although Jane's birth and marriage certificates are in her mother's married name of Linquist, the marriage notice in the paper is given as Jesse Cook marrying Jane Smith, so that is presumably the name everyone knew her by." (Kim Tilsted)
