- Matthew was a publican. Hannah Fountain 1873 is a descendant of Mark Fountain, the brother of Matthew. John, their father was a weaver, but also became a licenced victualler in Slapton. After John's death Matthew took over the pub. Meanwhile older brother Thomas was running a pub a few miles away in Ivinghoe. Mark then continued in the family business and ran another pub in Ivinghoe when he was old enough!
None of Mark's children continued with the pub business though some of Matthew's children did.
The Carpenter's Arms in Slapton that was run by John and Matthew and where Mark grew up is still going today (2008), and is still called the Carpenter's Arms.
