Notes

  • "The arrival of the family in Hertfordshire seems to be due to the fact that they mostly worked as servants/gardeners etc in big houses and seem to have moved around a lot to different jobs.

1851C: Elizabeth, William, Caroline and Philip are all with their parents in Beckenham.

1861C: William and Caroline are still at home; Elizabeth is married to Samuel Barton from Gosport and Philip is an undergardener at Coates near Chichester.

1871C: Elizabeth and Samuel have moved to Islington; William is married to Elizabeth Knott and is a gardener in Croydon; Caroline is a housemaid at Pelling Place, Old Windsor and Philip has married Sarah Holmden and is a gardener at Foxearth.

1881C: Elizabeth is still in Islington; William is a gardener at Lockers House, Hemel Hempstead; Caroline is married to John Dobson and living in Egham, Surrey; Philip is still a gardener at Foxearth.

1891C: As 'Kingwood'. Elizabeth is still in Islington; William is at Bury Hill, Water End Hemel Hempstead; Caroline is in Old Windsor; Philip is a gardener at Lambsey Lane, Little Gaddesden, Herts.

1901C: Elizabeth is still in Islington; William has died, but his daughter Alice is a laundrymaid at Chequers Court, Bucks (now the prime minister's residence) and his son George is a footman at Silverlands House, Chertsey. Caroline is still in Old Windsor and Philip is a gardener in Berkhamsted, living with his daughter, now spelled 'Eleanor' and her husband William Cook.

1911C: Philip still lives with the Cooks at 61 High Street Berkhamsted. They have three children: George Harry b.1900; Alfred Harrold b.1904 and Reginald Jack b.1907."
